So you may or may not have heard that The Jersey Shore's Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi recently gave birth to a baby boy. This isn't exactly the kind of "news" that we would typically cover on our blog... but everyone seems to be talking about conception and reproduction lately (thanks to assholes like Todd Akin, Tom Smith and the Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan). We've been seeing some hypocrisy over on the "anti-choice" side that has pissed us off and caused us to do what we never thought we'd have to do - defend Snooki.
We recently saw this status on the Facebook wall of a former "friend": It sickens me that Snooki has a baby.
Now this isn't exactly the most offensive thing we've ever seen. We're sure there a lot of people who are worried or distressed by the idea that the Jersey Shore party girl has to be responsible for another tiny human being. But just a few days before, this particular "friend" had been going on and on about the sanctity of life and being "pro-life" during a conversation about how women can reconcile being female and still voting Republican in this day and age. So it irked us to see her ranting about Polizzi's baby.
Ugh!! Society would be better off if some people just couldn't reproduce.
Some people should just be prevented from having children.
Really? This is a person who has gone on and on about being "pro-life" but she thinks that society would be better off if some people couldn't have children. Now the hypocrisy of it really pissed us off. She calls herself "pro-life" and would like the government to force teenager rape/incest victims to have babies, but people like Snooki shouldn't be allowed? How about we mind our own fucking business when it comes to what other people do with their bodies!
Of course, we know that arguing with anti-choice zealots is usually a lesson in futility, so we tried to keep our response as polite and nonpartisan as possible. One of us commented defending Polizzi:
She plays a character on TV, it's not "reality". She's not nearly as dumb or screwed up as MTV makes her seem... she's making money off of that persona, which is pretty smart in my opinion.(If you need more convincing that reality television isn't always "real" check in with Jennifer Pozner at www.realitybitesbackbook.com.)
But then she took it a step further:
Of course, this Her nickname is Snooki. Seriously?? She's white trash on and off camera. Now, it just seems that she's being pretty unfair in her hatred of Polizzi. I can understand if someone had concerns about Polizzi's parenting because of her past drinking habits (still wouldn't be our business, but understandable) but that wasn't what she was addressing. (And we've seen this woman drink way more than the cast of The Jersey Shore so she shouldn't be criticizing anyone else in that department anyway.) It's not fear for the welfare of the child, it's just annoyance that someone she finds distasteful should bring another distasteful person into the world.
She has a stupid nickname so she shouldn't be able to have a child? We tend not to use the term "white trash", so we can't really say whether or not Polizzi's on camera persona matches that stereotype. (Let's just say that everyone has their own definition of "white trash" so there are people out there who might use that term to describe her. We're not saying we would agree, but just that insults based on race and socio-economic class are thrown around way too often.) But how can this woman pretend to know what Polizzi is really like off camera? Do they hang out socially?
If she really wants there to be fewer "white trash" people populating the world, maybe she should stop voting for candidates that try to limit access to birth control and education.
We're not going to out this person or bash her completely, because the sad thing is she's not the only person making statements like these. Google any article about Snooki's pregnancy or birth and you'll see a slew of offensive comments bashing her and suggesting that she shouldn't be allowed to have a kid. It's everywhere and no matter how we personally feel about Polizzi's TV shows we think this shit is unfair.
We left one final comment...
I guess I'm more concerned with teenage rape victims reproducing than B-list celebrities.
It's really sad that more people don't feel the same way.

It is very sad that more people don't feel that way, but snooky is famous and not many teenage rape victims are.
A lot of people are only able to really get into something if they know a person and people feel like they actually do know these celebrities.
Random anonymous rape victims will never have as much importance to people like that as a reality TV star.
