Almost everyone already knows that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month... but you might not have known that it is also GLBT History Month. In fact, most of you probably didn't know that, but you should and now you do! (And in case you missed it, National Coming Out Day was October 11th).
Around here at Evil Slutopia, 'all the gayness' is a common topic every month, but we're happy to celebrate the achievements of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender icons in October as well.
On the GLBT History Month website, you can find one "icon" for each day of the month (plus 62 previous icons from 2007 and 2006), each complete with a video, bio, bibliography, images and other resources. 2008's honorees include Del Martin, Tennessee Williams, Alice Walker and Tony Kushner... you'll want to check back in every day.
Obviously this is something pretty interesting to the ESC, seeing as we already care a lot about GLBT rights and GLBT history... however, even we didn't fully realize just how many people who have been so important to our society were gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. So we decided to do another one of our 'totally gay link roundups'. Only instead of bringing you current gay news, we're bringing you a roundup of gay history and what other people are doing to commemorate this month.
- First off, we have to start with the GLBT Historical Society. If you're looking for more information on the impact gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people have had on the world, you should definitely check them out.
- The Committee on Lesbian and Gay History (an officially recognized affiliated society of the American History Association) promotes the study of homosexuality in the past and present.
- If you're looking for information primarily on women, the Lesbian Herstory Archives is home to the world's largest collection of materials by and about lesbians and their communities.
- For a religious history, LGBT Religious Archives Network is an innovative venture in preserving history and encouraging scholarly study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender religious movements around the world.
- QueerMap.com invites visitors to "explore the cultural meanings and social power of homosexuality", by giving information on gay symbols, archetypes, stereotypes and images in history and myth.
- Gayly has a "Gay History of the World" that spans from ancient times through the present.
- Queers United has a feature called "Queering Up History" that lists LGBT-related events from around the world for different dates in history.
- People With a History is an online guide to lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* history and includes hundreds of original texts and discussions that address LGBT history in all periods and inall regions of the world.
- Rictor Norton, a scholar of literary and cultural history has written several essays on gay history and literature.
- If you're looking for a less scholarly look at GLBT history... you might enjoy History of Gay Bars in New York City. (Check the left margin for links to other cities, but we chose to spotlight New York because we're loyal and proud New Yorkers).
- If you're more musically-inclined, check out Queer Music Heritage, a website and radio show with the goal of preserving and sharing gay and lesbian music. (It includes expanded sections on various types of music including gay musicals, the Camp Records Label, and of course, drag artists).
- And finally, glbtq.com offers an encyclopedia of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer culture.
